Five years ago, at the North American0CH工业设计
International Auto Show in Detroit, Audi presented the Pikes Peak quattro concept study.0CH工业设计

This SUV, which provided the inspiration for today’s Audi Q7, had the world’s first0CH工业设计
fog lights equipped with high-performance light-emitting diodes.0CH工业设计

Integrated into the0CH工业设计
broad bumper as striking strips of light, the fog lights were also aesthetically pleasing and very0CH工业设计
popular with the public. Soon thereafter, the 12-cylinder Audi A8 went into series production as the world’s0CH工业设计
first vehicle with LED daytime running lights.0CH工业设计

Today all new Audi0CH工业设计
models are recognizable at a glance thanks to LED daytime running lights, not only during the day but also at night.0CH工业设计

Each Audi has its own personality in terms of lighting: the Audi A4 has a sweeping light strip which expresses elegance, while that of the Audi R8 radiates strength and dominance.0CH工业设计

The LED technology

A light-emitting diode, or LED, is a semiconductor device0CH工业设计
just a square millimeter in size – which can convert electrical energy directly into light with a very high efficiency.0CH工业设计

0CH工业设计

The first LED headlights introduced with the Pikes Peak0CH工业设计
concept generated 18 lumens per watt.0CH工业设计

For the sake of comparison, an ordinary household light bulb generates0CH工业设计
about 20 to 25 lumens per watt. A modern passenger vehicle’s xenon headlights, on0CH工业设计
the other hand, are very energy-efficient and create some 80 lumens per watt.0CH工业设计

Audi Shooting Brake Concept Audi Shooting Brake Concept0CH工业设计

The next generation of0CH工业设计
white high-performance LEDs will hit the market next year with 1000CH工业设计
lumens per watt
, thus surpassing the efficiency of xenon lights for the first time.0CH工业设计

Today’s xenon and LED headlights are four times more energyefficient0CH工业设计
than halogen headlights.0CH工业设计

By 2018, LED technology should be about eight0CH工业设计
times more efficient than halogen light. In addition, LEDs excel due to their practically indefinite service life and react up to ten times more quickly than traditional0CH工业设计
incandescent bulbs.0CH工业设计

“Light-emitting diodes are similar to0CH工业设计
computer chips. Every two years there’s an increase in output of about 30 percent,”
explains Berlitz, “and we’ll soon be able to create so much light with LEDs that0CH工业设计
entirely new applications will become possible.”
0CH工业设计

Audi Q5 LED RenderingDigital light, as Berlitz calls this new light technology, can be made more or less bright0CH工业设计
electronically and precisely adapted to a driver’s needs. Audi developers are0CH工业设计
convinced that future generations of headlights will react to weather conditions, a0CH工业设计
vehicle’s speed, the distance between vehicles, and potentially dangerous objects.0CH工业设计

Developers tightly bundle several light-emitting diodes to create modules known as LED0CH工业设计
arrays
.0CH工业设计

These arrays are extremely flat, very compact and require much less space0CH工业设计
than conventional light sources such as halogen bulbs or xenon burners.0CH工业设计

Because of0CH工业设计
this, and thanks to reflectors as well as sophisticated electronic controls, it is possible0CH工业设计
to realize very complex lighting functions in the tightest of spaces. Cornering light, for0CH工业设计
example, has traditionally been executed via complex mechanical means in0CH工业设计
headlights.0CH工业设计

Energy Efficiency

Audi TTS RoadsterLEDs can also reduce a vehicle’s fuel0CH工业设计
consumption. Vehicles’ conventional low-beam headlights, taillights, and license-plate0CH工业设计
illumination consume some 200 watts – which the alternator must constantly0CH工业设计
generate.0CH工业设计

By comparison, a mere 15 watts is required to power the new Audi A4’s0CH工业设计
LED daytime running lights, that equates to a decrease of about 0.2 liters of0CH工业设计
fuel per 100 kilometers and about 4 grams fewer CO2 emissions per kilometer.0CH工业设计

This advantage will be more and more evident when daytime running lights become mandatory in the European Union0CH工业设计
in May 2011.0CH工业设计

LED lights in design

The tiny light sources present designers with spectacular opportunities. Stefan Sielaff,0CH工业设计
Audi’s Head of Design, explains: “LEDs unlock the door to unrealized design0CH工业设计
possibilities for exterior design and interiors alike.”

diodes can be combined to create various shapes, which can ultimately result0CH工业设计
in a distinctive visual appearance.0CH工业设计

The taillights of the Audi A6 Avant are likely the0CH工业设计
best-known example of any tail end. These light-emitting diodes in a ring-shaped array have become every bit as instantly recognizable as the sweeping LED daytime0CH工业设计
running lights at the front end of the Audi A4.0CH工业设计

Audi A6 Avant Tail Light Audi A6 Avant0CH工业设计

Headlights naturally play a pivotal role in a vehicle’s light design. An appealing front end with one-of-a-kind lights makes a car as well as its personality and the brand recognizable at a glance.0CH工业设计

Sielaff adds: “LED daytime running lights epitomize this fact.0CH工业设计
Every light design is different, yet there’s no mistaking that every single vehicle is an0CH工业设计
Audi.
0CH工业设计

"Our daytime running lights cemented the visible persona of Audi models on the0CH工业设计
road and hone our progressive, sporty design.”
 0CH工业设计

Bear Light ConfigurationToday different configurations of LED daytime running lights now permit distinct0CH工业设计
differences among the Audi models – even in the dark.0CH工业设计

A strip of light can be0CH工业设计
designed to underscore a vehicle’s character, just as eyeliner emphasizes an eye.0CH工业设计
This fundamentally alters the body language of Audi models.0CH工业设计

“The lighting configuration of yesteryear – the radiator grille along with the round lights – called to0CH工业设计
mind the face of a friendly bear,”
notes André Georgi, Senior Designer of Lighting0CH工业设计
Systems.0CH工业设计

“The LED daytime running lights for the A Series, e.g. on the A40CH工业设计
and A5, look determined, elegant, and dynamic.
0CH工业设计

"The lights on the Audi Q5 and Audi0CH工业设计
Q7 appear especially broad and powerful.
0CH工业设计

"And the LED daytime running lights on the0CH工业设计
R8 symbolize the horns of a bull charging full speed ahead, bursting with vigor and pride.”
0CH工业设计

Bull Light ConfigurationThe Audi R8 is the spearhead of Audi’s light0CH工业设计
strategy and is optionally available with the world’s first all-LED headlights.0CH工业设计

In addition0CH工业设计
to the daytime running lights, the turn signals as well as low-beam and high-beam0CH工业设计
headlights are all executed by means of light-emitting diodes.0CH工业设计

Huhn explains: “A lot of people0CH工业设计
initially viewed this development as a mere marketing gimmick. Yet everyone who has0CH工业设计
seen these lights in action is not only astonished by the excellent output, but also0CH工业设计
thrilled with the homogenous distribution of light and the agreeable, daylight-esque0CH工业设计
color of the light."

Audi’s light strategy also benefits from something quite different, namely a0CH工业设计
psychological phenomenon: “Bright light created by small, compact light sources is0CH工业设计
unpleasant for the human eye. The combination of headlights and LED daytime0CH工业设计
running lights enlarges the light source, thus eliminating a nuisance,”
explains Georgi.0CH工业设计

Ideas and visions

Huhn Georgi Berlitz From left to right: Dr. Wolfgang Huhn, Head of the Light and Visibility 0CH工业设计
Department, André Georgi, Senior Designer Lichtsysteme and 0CH工业设计
Stephan Berlitz
, Head of Lighting Technology and Electronics0CH工业设计

At Audi the0CH工业设计
design process is initiated by developing and defining a vehicle’s character. The light0CH工业设计
designers and engineers from Technical Development play a hands-on role in this0CH工业设计
process from the word go. For example, one of the engineers – fittingly nicknamed “The Bridge” by his colleagues – works right in the middle of the Design Department.0CH工业设计

Conversely, a lot of the technically relevant headlight components are designed by0CH工业设计
Technical Development. This close rapport ensures that the departments confer with0CH工业设计
one another every day.0CH工业设计

As a vehicle’s exterior takes shape, the proportions of the headlights and the taillights0CH工业设计
are defined. Georgi says: “It’s a truly intensive process for us to develop new0CH工业设计
headlights; every idea and every vision from Technical Development and Design0CH工业设计
come together.”
0CH工业设计

Audi’s light designers turn to industrial design and architecture when they require0CH工业设计
inspiration for new ideas.0CH工业设计

In fact, more and more architects are integrating high-tech LEDs into their plans for new buildings, thus joining a worldwide shift toward energy-efficient lighting.0CH工业设计

Experts forecast that LEDs, energy-efficient and maintenance-free0CH工业设计
sources of light, will also become the first choice for indoor lighting.0CH工业设计

Audi LED Lights Design SketchAnother source of inspiration for light designers is nature.0CH工业设计

“Nature often shows us the way, allowing us to learn just how simply and effectively0CH工业设计
processes can be executed,"
explains the light designer Georgi.0CH工业设计

The most recent0CH工业设计
example of this is the taillights we developed for the Audi A1 Sportback Concept, which was inspired by the0CH工业设计
lattice structure of a dragonfly’s wing.0CH工业设计

The design of the taillights impressively0CH工业设计
demonstrates the relative simplicity required to construct a very large, stable and light0CH工业设计
surface.0CH工业设计

Georgi says: “With our bionic design, we transferred this constructional0CH工业设计
conception to the Audi A1 concept’s taillights, which needed to be lightweight0CH工业设计
because they are integrated in the tailgate.”
0CH工业设计

The headlights of the Audi A1 Sportback Concept are an additional illustration of nature permeating Audi design.0CH工业设计
Reminiscent of an open pine cone, reflector shells arranged successively in0CH工业设计
concentric circles harness the light of each individual diode to create lighting which is0CH工业设计
powerful and consistent.0CH工业设计

The future

Berlitz Stephan Berlitz, Audi Head of Lighting 0CH工业设计
Technology0CH工业设计
and Electronics0CH工业设计

Audi developers think that the future generations of headlights will provide "the right light for every driving situation".0CH工业设计

Huhn explains: “We’re striving to0CH工业设计
create intelligent headlights and taillights which think and anticipate in the interest of0CH工业设计
enhancing a driver’s safety and comfort.”
0CH工业设计

For example, there are already high-beam0CH工业设计
headlights in pre-series development which will allow drivers to navigate roads at0CH工业设计
night without temporarily blinding oncoming drivers.0CH工业设计

This is made possible by a0CH工业设计
variable distribution of light: An electronic system continuously calculates the distance0CH工业设计
to any approaching vehicles to ensure that the road ahead is ideally illuminated at all0CH工业设计
times – without irritating oncoming drivers.0CH工业设计

Interior lighting

LEDs also present new opportunities for interior lighting. Similar to interior0CH工业设计
architecture
, lighting scenarios are imaginable which would make it safer to operate0CH工业设计
the vehicle at night, render the interior considerably roomier, or impart a certain0CH工业设计
atmosphere.0CH工业设计

The optional interior lighting package with ambient lighting in the Audi A8 is an example. It gives the0CH工业设计
possibilities for customizing the interior lights: the driver can dim the light and0CH工业设计
configure various lighting profiles via the MMI.0CH工业设计

Andre Georgi André Georgi, Senior Designer of Lighting System at Audi0CH工业设计

These profiles respond as appropriate0CH工业设计
to certain driving situations – when a vehicle’s interior is illuminated by lighting within0CH工业设计
cities, for example, or becomes dark on unlit rural routes.0CH工业设计

When it comes to the lighting in vehicle interiors, developers are confronted with few0CH工业设计
limits. Safety and comfort are top priorities.0CH工业设计

Berlitz explains: “Think of a mountain hut0CH工业设计
at night. As you’re passing through an alpine meadow, you spot the warm light0CH工业设计
glowing through the hut’s windows. The light triggers that same cozy sensation you0CH工业设计
feel when you arrive home.”
0CH工业设计

“Just imagine: You press a single button on your remote control0CH工业设计
and the entire vehicle springs to life. The ‘headlight eyes’ awaken and an inviting light0CH工业设计
fills the vehicle’s interior as if to say: Welcome home!”
