FREEDOM360

With its triple rotation function, the FREEDOM360 forklift truck offers a more efficient way to lift and transport materials.

Unlike most forklifts, the chassis, cab, and front fork of the FREEDOM360 can rotate horizontally. Each part can rotate independently of the others. The rotatable body dramatically improves working efficiency, especially for short-distance transportation. Furthermore, FREEDOM360 is able to work in very tight spaces as the vehicle does not require a turning circle. The battery is positioned underneath the vehicle, where its weight can bring about greater stability. Also, a larger battery can be accommodated in this position. A touch screen gives the driver greater ease while controlling the vehicle, which has been styled to offer a refreshing image and to generate excitement.

The Big Mouth - Storage Chairs for Kids
red dot award
Design:

Prof. Zhang Jian

With a funnel on one side leading to a drawer on the other, The Big Mouth – Storage Chairs for Kids have been designed to comically resemble big open mouths. The funnel is a conduit for the collection of toys that are stored beneath the seat.

The Big Mouth – Storage Chairs for Kids have been designed to bring an element of fun to the job of putting toys away after play. Kids can throw their scattered toys and items into the chair’s big mouth, which funnels them into an integrated drawer located under the seat. Both parts of The Big Mouth – the chair and the drawer – are made with plastic to ensure that the furniture is lightweight and portable. The chair is moulded with plastic of a 12–15mm thickness for structural stability. The drawer has been designed to incorporate several plastic plates of various thicknesses, but could also be moulded. Bright colours such as green, yellow, and orange were selected as they can be easily identified with cartoon characters.

ShelterBench

ShelterBench is a public outdoor chair that can be sat upon and within. It provides shelter from bad weather.

Public outdoor seating is often situated in open areas that are conveniently accessed and provide the opportunity for the enjoyment of sunshine. Being unprotected from the weather, however, such seating cannot be used during rainstorms. ShelterBench is a two-layered seat that offers an internal space in which people can sit during periods of bad weather – including oppressively strong sunshine. The roof portion of the transparent chair-cum-sculpture provides shelter from the rain, and furthermore, is slightly darkened to block more of the overhead sun. ShelterBench is anchored and stabilised by a concrete slab that is buried underfoot. It provides the additional function of a shelter for the homeless population.

Counting Ring

Counting Ring is a small ring designed to help people count cash quickly, conveniently, and accurately by hand using infrared scanning.

The counting of cash is usually done in one of two ways – by hand or by machine. Counting by hand is slow, tiring, and can be inaccurate. Counting by machine is fast and accurate, but the use of the machines is not common outside places of businesses. Individuals and families would rarely have access to a counting machine.

Counting Ring is a new counting concept that frees people of the erroneous and tiring task of counting cash by hand. It consists of four main components: an LED display and power switch, sheet-separating veins, a battery slot, and an infrared scanner. Counting Ring is worn on the thumb, and the thumb is used to flip the notes.

The LED display communicates the number of the sheets that have been flipped, and acts as the power switch when it is pressed. The veins are set into the rubber part of the ring, making sure each note is flipped by the ring. The battery slot, hidden in the side of the ring, accommodates a button-shaped battery. The IR scanner is set in the right-hand position.

Counting Ring is small in size, easy to use, cheap, and portable. This greatly enhances efficiency and flexibility in currency transactions.

Press, Change Length

Press, Change Length is an adjustable grab ring that offers bus passengers comfort as well as safety during their trip.

To ensure the safety of standing bus passengers, handles and grab rings are a necessity. However, grab rings generally all hang at the same length despite the variable height of the passengers. Unsuitable grabbing postures can lead to discomfort and tired arms. Press, Change Length is an adjustable grab ring. It incorporates a regulatory wheel that allows its hanging length to be altered. By pressing the button on the side of the ring, the passenger can lengthen or shorten the cable to suit their height and comfort.

Projector

This portable camping projector has been designed for outdoor use – in particular to counter the boredom that can set in at campsites when night falls.

projector is a compact, lightweight, portable screen and projector for the watching of films at campsites. The supporting frame is made with four alpenstocks (trekking poles), which can be used when hiking. The screen is held to the frame with the four separable parts of the lens cap. The projector, with a shock-absorbing, wavy rubber surround, nestles in between the four alpenstocks. The number of components was reduced to a minimum so that the camper can carry as little as possible.

Electronic Ticket

Travelling by ship differs from other means of travel. The complexity of the ship’s layout can confuse passengers. The Electronic Ticket uses interactive technology to explain the ship’s layout and distribution of functional zones. It aims to make ship travel more comfortable and convenient.

The Electronic Ticket can be recycled just like a subway ticket. The ticket is set with relative information when sold. It is checked when the passenger boards the ship and disembarks. The information is cleared after recovering the ticket so that it can be recycled. This also allows the ship’s management to keep track of all passengers and ensure the safe disembarkation of all. The ticket contains an advanced light sensor module, which can modify the brightness of the screen according to the environment. This enables the passenger to read the ticket easily, even in the dark.

This ticket may speed up the passenger’s search for particular functional regions of the ship. When the number on the lower right corner is touched, the plan of the corresponding floor is shown on the display. The main functional regions are clearly marked. The square red key at the lower right corner provides different functions with different tapping sequences. The position of the passenger’s room, bathrooms, and the escape route are displayed. The “read urgent key” is especially useful when danger threatens. It would provide the passenger with an escape route.

Silk is a multi-functional electronic measuring tape that uses steel wire rather than metal tape to establish distances.

Instead of sheet metal, Silk uses steel wire to establish a distance. The wire is unmarked, and the measurement is shown clearly and exactly on a digital screen. A small yellow button indicates the screen’s power switch. It should be turned on when a measurement is being taken. A lock switch locks the tape measure at a certain length. When Silk is turned off, it can be used as a plumb.

The use of wire and a digital screen, rather than tape, allows this measuring tape to be much thinner and lighter than most. Silk also offers more functions than ordinary measuring tapes; in addition to operating as a plumb, it can also measure circumferences and record multiple measurements. It can be read clearly without obstruction. Silk provides an excellent combination of form and function.

Easy Open

Easy Open is a bottle lid that has been designed for easy use by those with little strength in their hands.

Older people and children, who may have less hand strength than others, often experience difficulty when opening bottles. Easy Open is a bottle lid that has been designed with an easy-to-grip square top. The bottom of the lid is round to suit existing bottle designs. The lid flares from the round end to the square end. The top surface of the lid is slightly raised and is movable, which gives the bottle an engaging aspect.

Double

Double is a clamshell mobile phone that integrates solar-powered charging technology and a 360-degree hinge.

To maximise the areas exposed to the sun during charging, the solar-powered Double phone can be opened up to 180 degrees. When opened to 360 degrees, the phone can be comfortably held for longer periods of usage – for example, when accessing websites or reading articles. The touch pad can be used to browse or turn pages. The clamshell structure has the added benefit of protecting the 3.2-inch LCD screen. A transparent panel allows the time, incoming calls, and text messages to be viewed directly while the phone is closed, negating the need for a second LCD screen on the outside. Double is made with recyclable material.

Donut Jumbo Ring

Donut Jumbo Ring is a convenient expanding and contracting floating ring that can be carried in a small cannister.

Are you tired of carrying a giant jumbo ring with you when you go swimming? Are you tired of inflating the jumbo ring to keep it in its top condition? Donut Jumbo Ring will change the way you use these floating devices. Donut Jumbo Ring can be compressed into a much smaller tube shape for easy carrying. Before using it, all the user needs to do is expand the tube and connect the two ends to make a ring. The sockets placed at each end of the Donut Jumbo Ring will keep the air sealed inside.

Hakka

Inspired by traditional Chinese Hakka houses, Hakka is a tea set that emphasises sharing.

The form of the Hakka tea set was inspired by the traditional housing structures of China’s Hakka people. These buildings were large communal living structures that were often round in shape. They were designed for defensive purposes. Multiple families lived within them, sharing resources and helping each other. Sharing tea is a common Chinese practice, and the Hakka tea set emphasises the notion of sharing. Four stacked cups are accommodated in the central void of the doughnut-shaped teapot.

Turn the energy

The idea behind Turn the Energy is to enable the rotating brake discs of an electric car to perform the role of a generator by converting mechanical energy into electric energy. This occurs through the cutting of magnetic lines of force. Power is supplied to the car.

Turn the Energy employs the electro-motive principle of physics – whereby the cutting of magnetic lines of force is able to produce electricity in a generator – to the rotor of the brake discs of an electric car in order to supply power to it. The idea behind Turn the Energy is to enable the rotating brake discs of an electric car to perform the role of a generator by converting mechanical energy into electric energy by cutting its magnetic lines of force.

When the car is in motion, the wheels turn the built-in coil rotor of the brake discs. By using the armature of the generator to cut the magnetic lines of force, electric energy is produced. The energy resulting from the rotation could be transformed into reusable electric energy to supply power to a car for the headlamps, air-conditioning, sound system, and other devices. Turn the Energy is able to reduce the overall amount of energy consumed – especially fossil fuels.

Attraction

Attraction is a magnetic knife block that can be re-assembled as a chopping board. It was designed to bring convenience and cleanliness to the storage of kitchen knives.

Traditional knife blocks are difficult to clean, and can breed bacteria easily. Attraction uses embedded magnets to hold separate planks of wood together. Shallow channels cut into each plank create niches that accommodate the knives. The size of the knife block can be customised to suit the size of one’s knife collection, and the knife block can be easily dismantled for thorough cleaning. The planks can also be arranged in a horizontal format to create a chopping board.

Anti-Waste

Anti-waste is dual-function tap that dispenses soap as well as water with an easy-to-use lever. It was designed to prevent the wastage of water while people lather soap on their hands.

When washing their hands, people usually forget to turn the water off while they apply soap. In the city of Shanghai, if people were to turn the water off while applying soap to their hands, approximately 1,000 tonnes of water would be saved on a daily basis.

However, any standard tap makes this kind of saving very difficult. The process of washing one’s hands will always result in trying to turn the tap back on with soapy hands. If the dispensing of soap and water could be combined into a single easy-to-use fitting, hand washing would become more convenient and water could be saved.

Anti-waste uses a single lever to activate the soap dispenser and the tap. Liquid soap is stored in the top part of the tap, in a chamber accessed by a screw-on lid. Raising the lever turns on the tap, and lowering it turns the tap off. Soap is dispensed by pressing down on the lever.
