[关于比赛]
The Kokuyo Design Award competition was established in 2002, inviting innovative and ingenious ideas that will contribute to the creation of user-oriented products. We have since welcomed a significant number of participants, both from Japan and overseas. Some of the award-winning ideas have taken shape and are now offered to our customers in the form of commercial products. We have selected the concept of “OKUYUKI” as the theme of the current award. Kokuyo Co., Ltd. is commemorating its 100th anniversary this year, and we want to take this opportunity to re-examine the nature of the products found in our daily lives, opening up design possibilities in the process. We encourage you to take part in the 4th Kokuyo Design Award.

[主题] OKUYUKI

[主题解释]
The word “OKUYUKI” is used to indicate distance and dimensions, or used figuratively to describe a character or to convey a sense of reserve. Machiya, a traditional townhouse in Kyoto, is a typical example of a structure with depth─it is a house with a small entrance built on a deep, narrow lot. As another example, the iPod is designed to perform a variety of complicated functions, yet it is simple and easy to operate. This too can be described as a product with depth. The handle of a Japanese cooking knife, a simple wooden bar, can be gripped in any way. This simplicity of structure enables the user to find his or her ideal grip. Shoji, a Japanese paper sliding door, is more than just a simple partition. It is made to give a sense of natural light, or to hint at the presence of something or someone on the other side. The design of a shoji thus also may be said to incorporate the concept of depth. Taking these examples into consideration, we can see the extent to which culture itself is infused with notions of depth. A product with a small entrance that leads into a deeper space; an easy-to-use product with a complicated structure; a product that allows myriad individual methods of handling: the staff of the Kokuyo Design Award 2005 is asking you to add to these examples your own concepts of depth. We are soliciting designs that implement such new concepts, in the hopes of countering─even to a small degree─a notable global tendency toward superficiality.
